northern maidenhair fern

native, ground cover, rock garden, part shade - shade
e and cent North Amer., east Asia

A lovely, delicate fern with shiny, black or dark brown upright stalks which carry dainty, blueish-green, fan-shaped, lace-like leaflets in a circular array. Spreads slowly to form a dense colony. Intolerant of direct, hot sun, but is quite adaptable as long as it has a bit of shade and a steady moisture supply. Best in a moist, fertile soil with good organic content.
