Aster

An interesting, vine-like aster with narrow, grayish-green leaves. Bears an abundance of pink to pale purple flowers beginning in August. Flowers peak in their showiness in October, and can last through November in milder climates. The sweet almond scent of the flowers is strongest on sunny days. Climbs trellises or other structures with ease, sometimes reaching a height of 10'. Stems that are not killed by the winter should not be cut back in spring to encourage bushier growth.

Clouds of small, daisy-like asters (to 3/4” diameter) with pale blue rays and yellow centers bloom, often profusely, from late summer to early fall. Leaves are sharply-toothed, with the lower ones being heart-shaped (to 5” long) and the upper ones being smaller and more ovate. Grows in rich, dry or moist woodlands, bluff bases, stream banks and moist ledges. Flowers are attractive to butterflies. Deer resistant.

A woodland species with heart-shaped leaves. Clusters of white flowers about 1" across appear in late summer. Prefers moist soil and partial shade. Makes an interesting ground cover.

The combination of relatively short stature and large (to 11/2" across), showy, violet-purple flowers make this a particularly desirable species for cultivation in gardens. Blossoms in late summer and fall. Should have plenty of sun for best flower production. Often grows naturally in dry, sandy soil, and is quite tolerant of such conditions.
