eastern wood-fern
|
native, rock garden, part shade - shade
n N Amer
A medium sized fern with with stiff, leathery, evergreen, bluish-green fronds. With its vase-like form and attractive bouquet of fronds, it adds beauty and interest to the garden at all seasons. The fronds can be cut, in moderation, for use in flower arrangements. Well-behaved, with a moderate growth habit; tends to form a single, large crown. With its upright rootstock that on older plants tends to be exposed and conspicuous, it behaves essentially like a small tree fern. Does best in a cool position in the garden. This species prefers moist, loamy soils, but is drought tolerant and easy to grow. Well suited to a shaded rock or woodland garden.
