Lonicera

The leaves, which are smooth with waxy undersides, are paired on the stems and often joined to each other at their bases. The overall effect is much like that of juvenile eucalyptus foliage. The flowers clusters, which appear in late spring, are in their own way are quite exotic and showy. Bright red fruits, which are eagerly consumed by birds, follow in summer. When among other plants will sometimes twine upwards in vine-like fashion. Often grows naturally in dry, rocky situations.

A broadly rounded shrub with thick, oval leaves which are evergreen in mild climates. The small, creamy-white, very fragrant flowers appear in early spring, or during winter in warm areas.

Similar to Hall’s honeysuckle, this vigorous selection flowers from spring until fall with sweetly perfumed blossoms opening cream and aging to yellow, even within the same flower cluster. Large sprays of frayed flowers have a Brussels lace appearance and are fragrant in the evening. Prefers humus-rich soil with roots in the shade and flowers in the sun. Low maintenance, but has not proved to be invasive. Will tolerate clay soil and alkaline soil.

Clusters of unusual yellow and purple flowers appear on this shrubby vine in June or July. Bright red berries follow. Upper leaves are united at their bases, in eucalyptus fashion. Waxy-white leaf undersides contribute to the plant's ornamental quality. Usually twining, but in open situations may develop a shrub-like growth habit.

Bears 2" long flowers, bright orange-red outside, yellow inside, in summer. Evergreen in mild climates. Tolerates partial shade. Attracts hummingbirds.

Similar to the species form, described above, but grows in a more compact, restrained manner. Bears clear yellow, fragrant, tubular flowers through the summer and into the fall. The plentiful, bright red berries, which are sought after by birds, provide a colorful complement to the flowers. This selection is notably resistant to powdery mildew. Named for a botanist of colonial Virginia.

Similar to the species form, but tends to be a bit more shrub-like does not climb quite as actively. Bears 2" long flowers, bright orange-red outside, yellow inside, from early summer until late fall.
