purple hairgrass

ornamental - grass, dry - moist, sun - part shade
e and cent US

An outstanding ornamental, this clumping grass in late summer or early autumn bears delicate, airy, light purple flower plumes which appear to hover like clouds above the foliage. Prefers sandy or rocky soil, full sun, and good drainage. Moderately tolerant of shade and drought but blooms much more heartily with some moisture and lots of sun.
