Pachysandra

This native of rich woods in the Southeast resembles Japanese pachysandra in its general form. The leaves of Alleghany pachysandra, however, are much broader and attractively mottled with white. The small, fragrant white flowers appear in early spring. Foliage will winter best, in cold regions, if the plants are situated in a somewhat protected location. An excellent native ground cover. Alleghany pachysandra is apparently not subject to the insect and disease problems which can sometimes damage plantings of Japanese pachysandra. ONE UNIT = FOUR PLANTS.

Spreads to form a dense colony of dark green, evergreen foliage. Bears white flowers in terminal clusters in spring. An exceptionally neat, long-lived, low-maintenance ground cover. Once established, pachysandra is capable of holding its ground and looking good indefinitely with little or no maintainance. Pachysandra even "eats" tree leaves which fall onto it - moderate quantities of tree leaves will simply disappear under the pachysandrea foliage, there to decay and enrich the soil. Prefers at least a bit of shade (and requires it in warmer climates), but does well in full sun here as long as the soil is not too dry. Has been free of noticeable pest or disease problems in our plantings. ONE UNIT = TEN PLANTS.
