Phlox

An evergreen, trailing phlox with narrow leaves about 1/4"x11/4". Leaves turn reddish-purple in winter. Leaves and stems are covered with soft hairs. Pink flowers about 3/4-1" across appear in late spring. Tolerant of dry soil.

A creeping, mat-forming species with evergreen, conifer-like foliage. Bears masses of lavender flowers in spring.

This interesting species features trailing stems with narrow evergreen leaves to 5" long clustered in rosettes. The pink flowers appear on upright stalks over a period of months, from late spring through late summer .

Upright stems are topped with showy flower clusters in late spring and early summer. The earlier flowering and relatively thick leaves of this species distinguish it from the common garden phlox, Phlox paniculata, which it otherwise resembles. Also, the selections of Phlox carolina listed here are resistant to powdery mildew, which often afflicts common garden phlox.

Foliage is attractive and semi-evergreen. Eye-catching in spring when it is covered with light blue flowers. Spreads by means of creeping shoots which arise at the base of the plant. Likes a bit of shade, but with a good moisture supply does well in full sun

Like the species, above, but flowers are white with just a hint of blue.

An upright perennial with long, slender, glossy, dark green leaves. Spreads slowly to form a clump. The lovely, fragrant, purple-pink flowers are conspicuous in May, well before other tall Phloxes bloom. Flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Tolerates more soil moisture than most other Phlox species. Foliage has excellent resistance to powdery mildew.

Upright stems, with slender leaves. Bears clusters of pink-purple flowers about 1/2" across over a long period in late summer. Often grows wild along stream banks. Attractive, easily grown, and quite different in appearance from the commonly grown tall phlox species. In our planting it has been free of powdery mildew, which commonly affects other tall phlox species.

Resembles Phlox subulata; similar in its cultural requirements. Bears salmon-pink flowers, in spring.

The slender stems and long slender leaves of this species are softly hairy, giving the plant a downy appearance. Bears a profusion of light purple to pink flowers in late spring. Flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Well-suited to dry, sunny locations. Foliage has excellent mildew resistance.

A low, mat-forming species with small, oval, evergreen leaves. Fragrant flowers about 1" across appear in clusters on upright stems in spring. May prefer a bit of shade but does well here in full sun as long as the moisture supply is adequate. Neat in appearance, and spreads moderately quickly. A fine native ground cover.
