A small fern with leathery, evergreen fronds. Prefers partial shade and a humus-rich, acidic soil, but is fairly adaptable. At home around rocks and ledges, sometimes forming a carpet on nearly bare rock. Grows on trees in warm, moist regions. In a suitable location it will spread slowly to form a continuous mat.
