common haircap moss
|
moss, native, ground cover, rock garden, shade
distributed worldwide
This relatively large moss is capable of forming a soft, lush, evergreen, carpet-like mat over sizable areas. Prefers moist, acidic soil and light shade. Will grow in full or nearly full sunlight if the soil is moist; one of the best carpet-forming species for such locations. Fairly tolerant of poor soil and slow drainage (but does need good drainage). Will stand occasional foot traffic. Worthy of consideration as a ground cover where conditions are suitable. It is said that, in the gardens of Japan (where mosses are highly regarded as garden subjects), this species is probably grown more than all other moss species combined. For many gardeners, and in many garden situations, this is probably one of the best moss species to start with. Can't ship to CA, WA, AZ, or OR.
