Somewhat spiny, with small, glossy leaves and showy orange-red flowers to 11/2" across. Evergreen in mild winter areas. Widely cultivated for its edible fruit. The pomegranate is among the most ornamental and long-lived of all fruit trees. Produces the highest quality fruit in areas with a long, warm growing season and little rain during the ripening period (fall). Grown successfully outdoors as far north as favorable locations in zone 7, but subject to injury at temperatures near 0° F. In marginal areas, planting against a sunny, south-facing wall is very helpful. Adaptable to growing in containers, and can bear fruit fairly well when grown as a container plant. Also popular as a greenhouse plant.

'Wonderful'
Flowers are orange-red, double, to 3" across. Fruit of 'Wonderful' is very large, and of good quality although relatively tart. This is the large pomegranate variety probably seen most often in supermarkets.
