hairy lipfern

terrarium, rock garden, dry - moist, sun - part shade
e and cent US

The delicately cut leaves of this distinctive little fern have dark brown stems. Grows naturally on rocky slopes throughout much of the US. Considered relatively easy to establish and grow, it prefers a sunny or lightly shaded, well-drained location. At home among rocks, but does not require them. Grows naturally among limestone and non-limestone rocks, although some sources indicate that it prefers an acidic soil. Can do well in terrariums, but should be kept on the dry side. Quite drought tolerant once established.
