native, fragrant, rock garden, part shade - shade
N Amer, Japan

A common woodland plant. The rounded, glossy, evergreen leaves grow in a basal rosette. The small, bell-shaped, waxy-white flowers appear in June on upright stalks. These flowers are intensely fragrant; even though the plants and flowers are small, the fragrance can often be detected at some distance from the plants. The leaves, which contain a drug related to aspirin, have been applied to wounds as a poultice to relieve pain.
