hairy spiderwort

native, ground cover, sun - shade
se and cent US

The long, slender, arching, spreading leaves emerge from the upright stem in a form reminiscent of the shape of a spider. The bright violet-pink flowers about 1" across appear in cluster atop the stems in late spring and early summer. Prefers moist soil and tolerates partial shade. We have found the plant to be quite tolerant of various situations, including poor, dry soil. Spreads to form a colony, making a very effective ground cover. Foliage disappears in mid-summer, but reappears in fall and remains green through winter.
