e US
A round-headed species, suitable as a shade or ornamental tree. The dormant twigs have a pleasant wintergreen flavor. They can be chewed like gum or steeped in water to make tea. Black birch was formerly the main commercial source of oil of wintergreen. Does not thrive in heavy clay soils, but is otherwise fairly tolerant of soil conditions. Prefers cool temperatures.
