buffalo grass

native, ornamental grass, ground cover, dry - moist, sun
cent US

A low growing, drought-tolerant grass which forms an attractive, low maintenance turf. A dominant grass of the short grass prairies. Of the commonly used lawn grasses, buffalo grass is the only one native to the US. Remains quite low and neat even if not mowed. A good ground cover for dry locations. The sod houses of the early settlers of the American prairies were made largely of buffalo grass sod.
