tufted hair grass
native, ornamental grass, ground cover, sun - part shade
Greenland, N Amer, Eurasia
This grass grows in dense clumps that can become 1-3'tall and equally wide. The large, loose flower panicles can be up to 3' long and are profuse to the point of concealing the foliage. The green flowers form in May. They mature to a golden color with a hint of purple and are showy until late summer. In cold climates the foliage may become dormant in winter; in milder climates the leaves turn yellow-orange after a good frost but persist throughout the winter.
