Sempervivum

(Crassulaceae - sedum family)
About 40 species of succulent, perennial herbs. Many are popular garden plants because of their ornamental value and ease of cultivation. Plants consist of low, compact, evergreen, flower-like rosettes of succulent leaves. The plants send out numerous offsets, and spread in this manner to form a dense colony. They like sun and a well-drained soil. Will grow on nearly bare rock or concrete if a small pocket of soil is provided in which the plants can gain a foothold.
