native, ornamental grass, sun
n and cent Atlantic coast of N Amer; also, shores of the Great Lakes

Adapted particularly to growing in shifting sands and tolerant of salt water, this species is highly effective as a dune binder. Spreads by means of strong, hard, creeping rhizomes. Neat foliage and 6-12" long seed heads add ornamental value. May require shifting sand in order to persist indefinitely.
