A delicate, finely cut fern often seen in woodlands and meadows. Prefers partial shade, but will grow in full sun where the moisture supply is adequate. Despite its delicate appearance, it is quite rugged and adapts well to cultivation.

The most colorful and striking of the small, hardy ferns with tricolored fronds of maroon, medium green and silvery, almost metallic, gray extending into garnet veined stems. This fern has a has a graceful vase shape with a weeping habit and lightens up dark, shady areas with unique color and texture. Prefers shade in moist, rich soils. Slowly spreads by creeping rhizomes forming a clump; not aggressive. In its native Asian habitat it can be found in swamps, thickets and damp woods. Well suited for use in shade or woodland gardens; also makes a nice addition to rock gardens. Easy to cultivate. Resistant to deer, and not known to be subject to any pest or disease problems.
