umbrella sedge

moist - wet, sun
Africa

An interesting ornamental, umbrella sedge develops a cluster of stems, each with a whorl of leaves at the top. The overall effect is somewhat like a grove of miniature palm trees. Grows well in moist to wet soil or shallow water. Will winter over in colder areas as long as it is protected from hard freezing. Can also be wintered by taking cuttings of the leafy stem summits and placing them in water - new plants will develop at the leaf bases.
