native, ground cover, sun - shade
e N Amer

The finely cut fronds are sweetly scented, especially when dry. Spreads slowly to form a dense patch. One of the best of the native plants for use as a neat, long-lived, low-maintenance ground cover. (Under suitable conditions, an established cover of hay-scented fern can be virtually maintenance-free.) Prefers moisture and partial shade, but is more tolerant of dry, open situations and poor soil than most ferns.
