ne and n central North Amer

Upright, very slender-leaved, grass-like plants. In late spring or early summer they bear showy white, fluffy, cottony seed plumes which persist for weeks. For shallow water or moist soil. May requite somewhat acidic conditions for best growth; a mixture of peat moss and soil would likely be suitable if soil is not naturally acidic.
