Fewer than 20 species of perennial herbs, native to the southern U.S and Mexico. Closely related, and similar in appearance, to plants of the genus Agave ("century plants"). Sometimes cultivated as ornamentals.

Develops a rosette of succulent leaves to 2" wide by 2' long. Spreads by rhizomes, eventually forming a colony. The unusual, 2" long, greenish-yellow flowers are borne on tall, slender stalks in summer. The pleasant, spicy fragrance of the flowers is especially noticeable in the evening. Tolerates dry soil.
