Physostegia
(Labiatae - mint family)
About 15 species of perennial North American herbs. Easily cultivated wildflowers, they are useful as ornamentals. The selections below are tolerant of wet soil, and reports suggest that they also have unusually good drought tolerance.
virginiana
peren • ht 4' • zones 4-8
obedient plant
native, moist - wet, part shade - sun
e and cent N Amer
Attractive white flowers appear on this upright plant over a period of weeks in late summer and fall. If a flower is pushed aside to a new position, it will remain there. This behavior is decidedly unlike that of most plants, and accounts for the name "obedient plant". Spreads actively by rhizomes. Tolerant of wet soil. Has also been reported to have good drought tolerance.
