(Gramineae - grass family)
Bamboo. Three species of tall, evergreen, woody-stemmed grasses of temperate eastern Asia.

Pseudosasa japonica
japonica max ht 18' • max culm dia ¾" • min temp 0° F

arrow bamboo; metake

container, screen, sun - part shade
Japan

A large-leaved (to 13" long by 1-1/2" wide) bamboo. Does not spread as rapidly as some bamboos, but can be quite aggressive in warm climates. Has a distinctly running-clumping growth habit, producing clusters of culms separated from other clusters by areas with few or no culms. Prefers partial shade, at least in warm climates. One of the best bamboos for growing in containers.

less than (<) 1' tall, cat # 8S2E1 $16.95 each.
1'-2' tall, cat # 8S2E2 $27.95 each.

japonica tsutsumiana max ht 18' • max culm dia 3/4" • min temp 0°F

green onion bamboo

container, screen, sun - part shade
Japan

Similar in growth habit to P. japonica, but perhaps a bit smaller and less aggressive. The culm internodes of this selection are sometimes swollen like the bulb of a green onion. Prized in Japan as an ornamental for this feature. One of the best bamboos for growing in containers.

less than (<) 1' tall, cat # 8S2F1 $16.95 each.
1'-2' tall, cat # 8S2F2 $27.95 each.
