Cattley guava; purple strawberry guava

container, edible fruit, hedge - screen, sun - part shade
Brazil

A dense, fast growing shrub or small tree with attractive dark green foliage. Bears white flowers about 1" across in early summer. Sweet, purplish-red fruits about ¾" in diameter ripen in late summer or fall. The fruits have a high vitamin C content. Can begin bearing within 2 years after planting, and can produce fruit abundantly even when grown as a container plant. Grows and fruits very well in greenhouses; should do well as a houseplant also, if given a fairly bright location (summering the plants outdoors works well). Needs a steady moisture supply and well-drained soil, but is otherwise very tolerant of soil conditions. Usually not bothered seriously by pests or diseases in North America.
